Here’s a few money mindset exercises which will help you change your relationship with money. Once you start noticing how you see money, you can “unpick” some of your most unhelpful beliefs on the subject. It took me a long time to discover that the thoughts I held and some of the words I said were contradicting my desire to make money and create more freedom.

Money Mindset Exercises: Words Have Power

Your words have power.

John 1:14 is one of the most important verses in the Bible. It reads: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us”.

As you talk about yourself, your struggles and your lack of money, for example, you are literally talking it away from you, giving more energy to lack and limitation.

Before you can change this, you need to become aware of how you talk about money, the rich and how you see yourself. All of these have a bearing on your self image and your ability to make and keep money. So the first exercise is to bring awareness to your habitual talking patterns regarding money.

Who you spend time with and the things you say are equally important because you are likely to share similar ideas with those you surround yourself with. Jim Rohn “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with”.

Exercise: take a notepad and pen and for a full week make a note of anything negative you might say regarding money, lack, limitation or the rich. Don’t judge, just observe. Observe yourself in conversation with others, and also what they say about money too.

Money Mindset Exercises: Being The Watcher Of Your Thinking

Napoleon Hill says in his book Think and Grow Richthoughts become things” and it’s a common thread throughout many modern day and classic books on money mindset and the law of attraction.

Your thinking lays the ground work of all the actions you take in life. You simply won’t work towards something if you don’t believe in it! So the next exercise is to take some stock of the thoughts you give energy to. In particular, you want to pay attention to the thoughts with an emotional charge. These are particularly powerful and the subject of money is often one which often has such a strong emotional ingredient, particularly if you struggle with it.

Exercise: Sit comfortably somewhere quiet and relax your body. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breathing. Just notice your in-breath and your out-breath, counting to 5 for each cycle. As you do this, you will notice your mind tries to take your attention away from your counting, and the focus on your breath. Just observe without judgement and bring your attention back to your breathing.

Start with a 5 minute exercise each day and build up the length of practice each day. You will notice your thinking mind more and more. Observe thoughts which are the most powerful for you, controlling your emotions and directing your life. Meditation is a powerful tool to uncover your thinking processes. The more you practice the more conscious awareness you will bring into your habitual thinking patterns.

Money Mindset Exercises: Q&A

It’s useful to understand how you think about money, wealth, the “rich” and yourself. If you harbour negative thinking towards the wealthy, money, or even yourself, you can be assured that it holds you from attaining more wealth and prosperity. Here’s a few questions you can answer which will shine a light on your inner beliefs on this topic:

Exercise: go through these questions answering honestly about your thoughts on each one. Don’t judge yourself and mark yourself from 1-10 according to your answers: Print out the money mindset pdf and write out your answers to all the questions.

1 = disagree 100%, 10 = agree 100% .

  • Money is the route of all evil
  • It is more enlightened to be poor than rich
  • Rich people earn their money dishonestly
  • Having a lot of money will make me less spiritual or pure
  • Getting rich takes too much money and struggle
  • Having a lot of money is a big responsibility
  • I don’t feel good enough to be rich
  • Realistically, chances are I’ll never be rich
  • I’m striving for wealth but it doesn’t allow much time for anything
  • If I get rich, everyone will want something from me
  • If I get rich there are certain people in my life who wouldn’t like me
  • If I have a lot of money it means someone else will have less
  • Having excess money means you are greedy
  • I’m not very good in the area of money and finances

The higher your score on this, the more work you have to do on changing your money mindset to attract abundance.

Your Reasons For Making Money

What are your reasons for wanting more money? Is it to get out of debt, to have more things or to serve humanity better? To enjoy life more or to live more fully? Whatever your reasons, if you are only focusing on the negative reasons to have money you may be giving more energy to debt than to money!

If you harbour negative connotations about money, you may be keeping yourself from it. If you “hate the rich” for example, this isn’t a good match if you want more money. You will unconsciously keep yourself poor so you don’t fall into the category of being rich.

Exercise: Spend some time journaling out all the reasons it will serve the world for your to become rich, what it will allow you to do, who you will be able to help and so on.

  • Why does it serve the world for me to become rich?

If you’re unclear on this, there could be some internal resistance to your continued success if you carry conflicting ideas on this topic.

If you’re struggling with this exercise, think about who you could help once you’re more financially secure and abundant. What would you do if money didn’t matter? Money can give you more choice and freedom to do the things that are important to you. What would you do if you had an abundance of money and no money worries?
