Reframe your money beliefs = unlocking your abundance. We all have money beliefs which keep us in our current financial situation. But what if we could unlock those ideas which hold us from a more fruitful life? Well we can actually! It just takes a little work.
Imagine if you have just won the lottery. Think about all the things you would spend that money on. Would you invest any of it? What fears come up for you? How would it affect your friendships and relationship with family members? Perhaps there would be some jealousy from some? Think about why this would be a bad thing.
According to the National Endowment for Financial Education, 70% of lottery winners in the US end up broke within just a few years. This is a startling fact but many lottery winners attest that it was the worse thing that ever happened to them!
Money Beliefs: Unlocking Your Abundance
So consider yourself lucky that you’re not a lottery winner! Still, this shows that even though we say we want more money in our lives, there’s definitely a fine balance to be found when it comes to how much we make.
Our beliefs around income and money generation are inherited from our environment and most of them are “installed” before we had the ability to refute ideas we (now) don’t believe. Much of our thinking about money comes from out parents. The emotional input you received about money is “hardwired” into your subconscious mind. Limited ideas around money create your experience and by finding them and picking them out of your conscious mind, you can stop giving them more energy. Here’s a few ideas around the topic of money:
- Money doesn’t grow on trees
- Rich people are greedy
- Money doesn’t make you happy
- Poor people are more spiritual
Do you align with any of these ideas at all? Not only are you holding ideas which keep you from attaining money, but your relationships will likely have an effect too. See how many relationships are affected by a lottery win, for example. Many of them end up losing all their money and getting back to zero, living pay check to pay check and some of them ruined their closest relationships.
Money Beliefs: Unlocking Your Abundance
So if we are holding ourselves back from attaining more money and abundance, how can we stop it? There’s a few ways we can do this:
- Become more conscious of the thoughts and words you give energy to – particularly about the topic of money
- Stop focusing on what you don’t have – also called a poverty mindset, which only attracts more of the same.
- Use gratitude instead by consciously focusing on the things you have already (now), and being grateful in the moment.
- Change the things you tell yourself about you and about money – (your story)
- Your identity is meshed around your story and the way you think about money. Change your self image/identity, and you can make giant leaps forwards
- Notice strong emotions, relating to struggle, finances and money
This simple list can be used to shift your money mindset. But only if you practice on a daily basis and make this a regular habit. A “one off” session of mindfulness isn’t going to cut it. You have been “you” for many years and most likely you will have been thinking and talking about money in a certain way for a very long time.
Napoleon Hill Think and Grow Rich – “The subconscious mind is a garden in which weeds will grow in abundance if seeds of a more desirable nature are not sewn therein”
Hill attests that we have control over the function of what we allow to remain in the conscious mind and even though most people do not use this power, it is a major key to change. What you think and feel about, you bring about.
Money Beliefs Unlocking Your Abundance – Making The Unconscious Conscious
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will control your life and you will call it fate.” – C.G. Jung
There’s a few tools you can use to bring more awareness to your self talk and inner chatter. Meditation can help to quiet the mind and you can watch from a still, quiet place to see what’s going on in there.
You can also make a list of all the reasons why you don’t have what you say you want yet. This will give you some idea of the resistance you currently have to creating more abundance. Perhaps you’re not even clear on what you want? Write down some goals and determine exactly what you want. See a smart goals vs dumb goals. Make goals specific and measurable so you know when you achieve them. Vague goals won’t help you!
Go through this article and answer all the questions truthfully. This will help you iron out some of your beliefs which may be holding you back.
The main problem with digging though your unconscious mind is that when you look it disappears! When you’re acting more unconsciously, that’s when the things show up! This next exercise can help you notice when you’re giving energy to the wrong kinds of beliefs.
Stalking The Mind
I found this exercise is a book by Victor Sanchez called The Teachings Of Don Carlos. There’s several others in the book but this one I found most useful.
You’ll need a stopwatch which has an interval timer you can set on repeat throughout the day. Take a notepad and pen. Each time your timer goes off, write down three things:
- What you were thinking
- What you were doing
- Do you want this?
Obviously it is better if you don’t expect it when the alarm goes off, which is why an obscure time delay is best. If you set it on the hour you’re likely to expect it and therefore you won’t catch your mind out. This is a useful exercise to show you where your mind is when you’re not deliberately focused on it (as with meditation).
A New Identity
Changing your money beliefs can be difficult if your identity stays the same. Your self image is wrapped up in your belief system and identity. Who you are, or who you believe you are, is difficult to change. That’s why you will have likely had the same experience with money for a long time. To change your self image you need to observe your current story and change it to the “new you” story – one of wealth an abundance.
Write out your story as you believe it to be at the moment. Why do you want more money, what will you do with it? What are your struggles and why haven’t you attained the things you say you want yet? As you familiarise yourself with this story, you should see some strong beliefs coming up. Create a new story with some new beliefs and ideas which support the things you want, rather than talking them away.
