Back in 2014 I got involved in an online business and was introduced to cybernetic transposition. (See my about me page) But what is cybernetic transposition, and how does it relate to the topic of this website?
Cybernetic Transposition: Cybernetics is the study of control and communication in humans. (It derives from the Greek word for “steerman” or the person in control). Transposition means the transposing of one thing to another. In this case it’s the transposing of the success in one area of life into the success in another.
Cybernetic Transposition – Stuart Lichtman
Stuart Lichtman was an MIT professor who developed cybernetic transposition. He studied about 100 inventors and worked closely with over 50 of them. His studies led him to help some of these inventors cut the time cycle to invent by about 90%.
He used what he found to test his techniques on more people and ultimately came up with his cybernetic transposition technique. All you need is a previous success you recognise in your own mind as being a success. You can then apply the technique to achieve a success in any other area you choose.
81% of Stuart’s test group (50,000 people) achieved a seemingly impossible goal on the first try – but in the case of entrepreneurs the first-time success rate was closer to 100%.
Stuart describes Cybernetic Transposition as follows:
“Putting yourself consciously in charge by creating effective communication between your conscious and unconscious minds, by consciously transposing successes from any part of your life into other ones where you consciously want to produce success, resolving self defeating unconscious habit patterns into one that support you and by creating effective conscious communication with the part of you that knows what’s right for you.”
Cybernetic Transposition – Why We Fail
Most people will find that when they set a goal for themselves, such as to get in shape, all sorts of conflicts arise. That’s because their unconscious habit patterns are running the show! They join the gym, and a few months later, they quit and are back to square one! Despite the initial motivation to go to the gym, older habit patterns are stronger than the new ones. We resign that we didn’t really care enough to lose weight, and that our older ingrained habits were more important to us! “I just didn’t have the time” or “I’ll get fit next month” we say!
That’s because our subconscious minds are running the show, not our desires. We would be better to communicate our desires to our unconscious minds in a way it understands, and without interference from our existing competing beliefs and ideas.
This is exactly what cybernetic transposition does: it gives you a road map whereby you can get incredibly clear on what you want, and you can then communicate that to your unconscious mind. Once you do this, your unconscious mind flags it up so it runs in the background.
Your Self Image & The Three Step Process
The self image is an important cornerstone of your unconscious beliefs. When attempting to do something which goes against it, there’s huge resistance. So, if for example, you want to lose weight, but your self image tells you “you’re a fatty”, you won’t easily lose weight. Your self image props up your inner belief and outer results don’t change. But change your self image and all sorts of things can change on the outside, and with much less effort.
So how do you change ideas which you’ve had for a lifetime? Stuart’s Three Step Cybernetic Transposition process:
- Identify what you want
- Remove inner resistance to it through working with your subconscious desires and beliefs
- Create a powerful metastory
- Use your metastory to deliver a message to your subconscious mind
Identifying what you want isn’t all that easy. We have all kinds of inner conflicts when it comes to making decisions about what we want. So for example, we say we want to lose weight, but we don’t want to give up drinking alcohol and eating chocolate pastries! So that’s a conflict.
In Stuart’s Three Step Process you can remove the conflict by drilling down into what you really, really want, despite any conflicts.
What’s a Meta Story
What’s a meta-story? A meta-story is the story you create using cybernetic transposition to transpose one success you’ve had, into a new goal. We tell ourselves stories all the time in our heads. The trouble is those stories are often negative. “I’m not good enough”, “I’ll never get …..”, “Why can’t I ever get ahead?” and so on.
You might recognise some of those inner turmoil thoughts from time to time! The trouble is, those thoughts run continually throughout your life. They never stop. The meta story is a new and positive story you can use to communicate your desire to the unconscious mind. Much like with your usual story, it’s more powerful over time. If you’ve been telling yourself a story which is negative over time, it can have a detrimental effect on your life.
Replace your negative stories about yourself (which you tell yourself) with a new positive meta story. Run it over and over in your mind. Not only will the practice block out the negative thoughts you’ve had previously, but it will install new software in your mind which will bring about like effects.
